Safety Compliance Guidelines for Automatic Driveway Gates

UL 325 Gate Safety Standard for Manufacturers
UL Listed automatic gate operators manufactured after January 12, 2016 require 2 independent monitored protection devices at each potential entrapment point in any given gate systems.

Examples of external devices include gate edge sensors and photo-optic sensors. When used for entrapment protection, these external sensors are monitored for presence and function at least once during each operation cycle. If the device is not present or not functioning correctly, operation will revert to constant pressure and remotes will not work.

If you sell, install or service automatic gates, you’ll want to be sure
to follow some basic safety guidelines:


• Understand the UL 325 standard and how it applies to the specific gate system
• Be sure the gate is designed and fabricated to comply with ASTM F2200
• Identify all locations that pose a risk of entrapment and be certain to provide 2 different means of monitored entrapment protection at each location
• Identify hazard zones and provide guards to protect these areas. For example: a barrier gate arm might not pose an entrapment risk but can cause damage or injury to objects it may contact.
